Southwest Chief Route

Basic Info
Route: Chicago - L.A.
Distance: 2265 miles
Time: 43 hours
Cars: sleeper, coach, diner, lounge, baggage
  • chart of distance/elevation - http://www.trainweb.org/usarail/southwestchief.htm
  • helpful map of route - http://tickets.amtrak.com/secure/content/routeatlas/index.html?urlroute=47
  • specific cities it passes through http://www.railpassengerusa.com/powerpoint/SouthwestChief/SouthwestChief2.HTM
Using the information on miles traveled, I figured out the amount of miles traveled in each state and then got the percentage of the journey traveled in each state.
state - miles traveled within state - percentage of journey
IL - 162m - 7%
IA - 58m - 2%
MO - 217m - 9%
KS - 404m - 17%
CO - 233m - 10%
NM - 440m - 20% (majority of the train ride is spent in New Mexico)
AZ - 359m - 12%
CA - 392m - 17%

Some examples I've been looking at and that I looove:
