Final Project [4]: Visual Interview + Photos

I drew my design from three words that encompass Larry: child-like, friendly & minimalistic. Larry also enjoys bold, simple design which explains the bright red, blue and yellow and grayscale photography color scheme. Referencing children's books, the book is constructed out of matte board and paper. It begins with a picture with Larry's face blocked out by a yellow rectangle, titled "Looking for Larry by Mary Lim." As the viewer opens the book to the next spread, it features multiple pictures showing Larry's home. The photographs are taken as if Larry was just there: the faucet is left on, his door is open, the laptop is on, etc. Literally looking for Larry in the photographs, the viewer finally catches him in the last photo. Once the book is opened, the viewer is confronted with a close-up of Larry's eye. Humorous and simple, the book ends with Larry laughing; perhaps at what just happened or at the viewer's shocked response.

image: progress on visual interview

I've been experimenting with color because the book looked a little dull.
The gray colors were overpowering the book, and I needed bold colors to make it more engaging...

I took more photos of Larry covering his face with different backgrounds...
Larry likes industrial-looking design, and so I put him behind concrete and bricks
I also need more photographs of Larry's home. I needed pictures where it seems like Larry was just there, and the viewer missed him by a few minutes...

Critique:
looks a bit bland, too much gray
needs more bold colors
the selective coloring isn't working
just say "looking for larry" instead of "i'm looking for..."

image: second mock-up on larry

instead of having whole square units one color, I used selective coloring for things that show Larry's presence at home....

Larry Fulcher
introverted, friendly, minimalistic

I chose to depict Larry indirectly through the simple layout of the spreads, the colors used, and the surprise factor in the main spread. Larry's shy character goes with how the book does not directly address who Larry is, but passively. The cover reads, "I'm looking for Larry..." The book suddenly becomes a game. Meant to reference children's narratives, Larry also holds child-like qualities.

Critique:
yellow rectangle looks like a post-it note
text is not legible
