"Don't Ask" by Canan and Associates

Out of all the images in Typography 22, this image stood against the grain. Considering the extremely simple additions to the photograph, the power of the black box and small white text over the enlarged face almost shout out at the viewer. One can palpably feel the stark, black rectangle as an impeding force. A bit taken aback by the image, the viewer seeks some sort of explanation, but all that the artist gives is "Don't ask." The stamped-out identity of the man simultaneously presents a question and answers it.
